Overgrown

Somebody said it before
Someone’s always keeping score
They tell it and sing it and show
Our desires are the seeds of the weeds
In our gardens overgrown

If the fields turn to dust and the creek ain’t fit to drink
Would you rather have a boat that sails or sinks
I think today I’ll let the train rattle on
And if you think that the clouds are nailed to the blue
And it’s you whose turning, only you
Is the wind nothing more than your point of view

Well some kind of comfort’s in your sitting room gin
Some kind of love don’t care where you’ve been
And some kind of freedom is endless and within

Somebody said it before
Someone’s always keeping score
They tell it and sing it and show
Our desires are the seeds of the weeds
In our gardens overgrown

The highway is crowded and a hard road to travel
That old Jack of Diamonds is a hard card to play
But there’s an old road to ride and that’s the way
I met a sister on that old road she was asking for a ride
Said I’m on my way to the sea I’m breaking down the Great Divide
Breaking on through to the other side

Well if you ain’t surviving then you must be living
Goodbye desire cigarettes whiskey women
So fare thee well

Cause it’s the same story told
Over and over it’s older than I know that somebody

Somebody said it before
Someone’s always keeping score
They tell it and sing it and show
Our desires are the seeds of the weeds
In our gardens overgrown

Matter of Time

Ain’t nothing the wind can't do
Send a song across the ocean to you
But dreams will always fall into the soft palms
Of open hands

Wait until you hear the wind
Blow strong to understand
The ship’ll set sail and I’ll
Find you in another land

There’s a feeling that sometimes sleeps
It’s like a seed in the garden you keep
And it’ll grow if you let it unfold
Or you could dig it up and dig it out

Feels just like
You've got to say goodbye
All the time

In the morning the sun shines on the waves
Like gold hills on a great blue mountain range
Ain’t seen land in twenty one years
Listening to the wind blow

Listen good cause she whispers softly
Heed her words wisely
Hands to the sky

Wait until you hear the wind blow high
To ease your mind
The ship is sailing and it’s
Only a matter of time

December Flowers

Well she ain’t the first pretty girl I met
Who I fell for right away
But I can feel it in my bones and I’m willing to bet
That’s this one’s here to stay
She gets along plenty good without any other
She gonna right right home and say good things
‘Bout me to her mother

She said I met a man who can sing
Gonna bring me anything I need
She said I met a man and it’s clear to see
That this one’s only got eyes for me, she said

Honey what you bring back for me
I said I wrote you a poem and I bought you a diamond ring

December Flowers bloom
When she walks into that

Room of gold candlelight our favorite record spinning
And when it gets to the end of the line
It’s back to the beginning
Cause neither Billy the Kid nor Jesse James
Knew what they was missing
They’d put down their guns find Jesus Christ
If they knew the girl I’m kissing

Cause she laughs at most anything
And the waves come crashing on me
I get outta my head and into my heart
And nothing in the world can harm me
So I’ll sing this song til the break of dawn
Instead of my foolish drinking
While she smiles a mile wide and says
Here’s what I’m thinking

I’ve got a man who knows a suit of clothes
Don’t make the man, uh huh
She said I’ve got a man and I do believe
That this one really does love me she said

Honey, won’t you come back real soon
Waitin for me at three oclock in the afternoon

December flowers bloom
When she walks into that

Room all my blues go, my baby got me grinnin’
And when December winds do blow
The snow it starts to spinnin
But at the top of the hill the air is still
And the sun rains down its starlight
And the dance beneath the tall pines trees
Makes everything feel alright

Well I picked a flower for you afternoon in December
Remember when we were cold, I said
Something right and it all worked out
Well I guess that’s what it’s really all about
December flowers and you

Fades Away

There ain’t no feeling in this world worth keeping
So fire that arrow into the sun
The ribbons and the bows are torn apart by endless crows
Who pray on everything and everyone

Red is the colour of my blood endlessly flowing
Through my mind playing make believe
I feel it growing cold as I walk this dusty road
With diamond skies shining above me

But like a fading ring of fire
Like a raincloud in the desert blown away
It fades away

There ain’t no promise of paradise worth fighting for
No matter how grand the golden prize
Ain’t no clouds to walk on ain’t no tongue good enough to talk
For words are just the movements of lies

This song is for a friend who passed me by the other day
I said it feels like it’s been a thousand years since I seen you last
Tell me does it feel the same?

You said there ain’t no feeling in this world worth keeping
So I kept you in my pocket not my hand
The ones who come and go leave memories in your soul
And now I believe I can understand

That like a fading ring of fire
The line a shooting star leaves in its wake
It fades away
It fades away

Shaking Your Ground

No one wants to be the one
To break it to you that you’re not much fun
No one wants to be alone
When nobody’s coming home

Over there by the tree
There’s a couple of spades will you dig with me
I said who's to say what we’re digging for
Now you can’t dig it anymore

And I heard you shout
Because of an itty bitty mouse
And sometimes you step on ants for fun

Every time you come around
The whole world is shaking your ground

I don’t know, I haven’t seen
I thought you’d rather read a book than watch a TV screen
You say you hate wasting time
Your habits and your heart don’t rhyme

I cain’t predict the apocalypse
So there’s no need to lose it getting scared to bits
What’s to do is turn down the dial
And try to make your time worth while

But you fall apart
When your daddy won’t buy a jaguar
When that’s the last thing anybody needs

Every time you come around
The whole world is shaking your ground

And every time the ground shakes
Life to you is a heartache
Don’t pray against the rain
Cause your fountains will soon be drained

No one wants to be the one
To break it to you that you’re not much fun
No one wants to be alone
When nobody’s coming home

And I heard you shout
Because of an itty bitty mouse
And sometimes you step on ants for fun

Every time you come around
The whole world is shaking your ground

End of the Day

I wanted to write you something beautiful
And I wanted to write you in to my life
But for all I try I break down but I can’t cry
I don’t know, suppose I’ll fly

And I wanted to give it all away
And I wanted for you to hear me say
Come find me at the end of the day

In weary walk I wrestled with the rain
Wondering why the blues run the game
And then the sun broke and I took one sweet toke
And closed my eyes to the tree top skies

And I wanted to give that moment to you
And I wanted for you to see me through
So I’m asking what you’re trying to do

For six long years
I’ve dreamed by the banks of that stream
Shadows grow, woodsmoke rises through the grove
To a place where I’ve seldom been

So I’ll follow the sun, write you a song
And what I wanted to say I sing today
Maybe in a dream I’ll find my way

Driftin'

I can’t tell what you see in me
I only wonder cause I’m in too deep
As I lay my head for to take my sleep
Ramblin on my mind and I’m in too deep

Oh no, say it ain’t so but it is
I will I won’t I do but I don’t
Til you say hey man what gives
And I say that I’m

In too deep I can hardly sleep
There ain’t no chance of going back for me
So I’ll see where my two wild feet go
Lord knows I tend to drift from the shore

I don’t care if it’s night or day
I know I’m gonna feel the same old way
Feel my words cause they’re made for you
In too deep now I’m always blue

My oh my I try and I try don’t you know
I stand on the shore forever and for more
Til the tide lifts me up and brings me to your door
And all because I’m

In too deep I can hardly sleep
There ain’t no chance of going back for me
So I’ll see where my two wild feet go
Lord knows I tend to drift from the shore

What defeats my frown when the sun goes down
Ain’t nobody’s business but my own
If you let me cut the rope
Then I’ll just keep driftin from the shore
I’ll just keep driftin’ from the shore
I’ll just keep driftin’ from the shore

Old soul I’ve seen you before
Tell me what’s my name
A dream a drug a gift from up above
Said look out son you’re driftin’
Like a moth before a flame

I’m driftin'

New Fur Coat

She’s got a brand new fur coat
What do you think about that
She walks beside a handsome man
In a brand new Stetson hat

Her eyes above all the rest
She sees what she wants to see
Looks on straight dead ahead as
She walks by me

She’s got a pocket full of money
That’s just for fun
She don’t hear the drop of a dime
And all the boys except for me say
“I’m gonna make her mine”

Cause she may look mighty good
And no one knows how old
Well it might be crass but if you ask
I say she’s doggone cole

And that’s why she’s got a
brand new fur coat
What do you think about that
She walks beside a handsome man
In a brand new Stetson hat

She’s got a brand new fur coat
Spanish boots of leather and gold
She dug her soul a deep moat
Afraid it might be sold

Now if you fall in love with her
My advice is don’t
Cause she’ll use you up and trade you in
For a brand new fur coat

She’s got a brand new fur coat
What do you think about that
She walks beside a handsome man
In a brand new Stetson hat

Tomorrow I'm Gonna Die

Tell the queen not to weep not to moan
Tell her not to cry
Tell the stable boy to set the horses free
Cause tomorrow I’m gonna die

Tell the crowds they can gather if they wanna
Don’t cover up their children’s eyes
Yesterday came and went
Not tomorrow I’m gonna die

High noon, my angel’s gonna croon
And the Devil’s gonna look me in the eye
Tell me friends not to bother bringing thousand dollar bills
Cause tomorrow I’m gonna die

Tell the dreamers sleeping down at the bar
Although I doubt they’re wondering why
I didn’t show, just let them know
That tomorrow I’m gonna die

I’m a child of the earth
But my momma gave birth
To a miracle that’s running out of time
Messed up, went and run amok
And now tomorrow I’m gonna die

High noon, my angel’s gonna croon
And the Devil’s gonna look me in the eye
Tell me friends not to bother bringing thousand dollar bills
Cause tomorrow I’m gonna die

My crime my crime,
They say deserves more than doing time
Cause the air I breathe was killing me
From all the time I didn’t spend speaking what I believe
Until the feeling caught fire through this town
I went shouting out my black lungs “follow me down”
And my only regret,
I’ll never get to see the kings become the clowns

High noon, my angel’s gonna croon
And the Devil’s gonna look me in the eye
Tell me friends not to bother bringing thousand dollar bills
Cause tomorrow I’m gonna die

One That Weaves

The senses build fences tall meant for your skull
And the gates to the place you grow so safe
Are torn down when you sing us to sleep

The fear that you mirror when your mind is unclear
Makes it seem like a dream when you’re gone downstream
But the boat starts to sink when you think

And we were spun from a golden twine
The one that weaves itself through time
And when we’re down we remember
From what we are made

Your sorrow is borrowed from the thought of tommorow
Whose hands hold the moon on a pale afternoon
As the sun tries to slip through its grip

And when flowers look downwards to the ground words don’t cut it
When my words drift skywards they fall short of the clouds
Intentions, direction, tradition

And we were spun from a golden twine
The one that weaves itself through time
And the lines we promised to save
As long as we live are not likely to fade
And when we’re down we remember
From what we are made

In the reckless and feckless unkind world they’re restless
As the grass cuts your back and you awake in the bracken
To follow forgotten tracks

And you were spun from a golden twine
And I weave myself through time
And when we’re down we remember
From what we are made
