Recording, Mixing, and Producing
I offer recording, mixing, and production services for all kinds of projects, whether it’s a stripped-down acoustic EP, voiceover work, or your band’s full-length album. With flexible rates and portable high-end equipment, I can handle all the technicalities so you can perform at your best.
I started recording on a Tascam tape machine in 2003. I had a punk band in seventh grade and I loved figuring out how to make things sound as good as possible using only four microphones. While the technology has come a long way and mistakes can now be fixed with incredible ease, there is no substitute for a good performance with the mics in the right place. That old Tascam taught me a lot about what makes a good recording.
For years I recorded my own music, slowly acquiring better equipment as I filled up notebooks with songs. Songwriting and recording became part of the same process. I wanted a song to stand on its own as I wrote it, but I also imagined the recording, where different instruments could come and go, and where they would sit in the mix. I wanted to record the parts I heard in my head but musicians are busy people, and the most reliable way to add more instruments was to play them myself. That’s how I came to learn so many instruments.
I learned how to mix for a similar reason - it was too expensive to pay someone else because I was writing and recording too many songs. As it turns out, mixing offers as many creative opportunities as writing and arranging. Science and intuition, math and emotion, and the relationship between the performer and listener are all navigated through the mixing process. If crafting a song is like carving a stone, mixing is like polishing it to a warm shine.
In recent years I have found incredible joy in helping other musicians record their music. It allows for endless creativity in collaboration, and I learn something from every artist I’ve worked with. Contact me to learn more about my rates for recording and mixing!
Here is some music I’ve worked on:
“The process of recording The World Below with Eric was a joy. Eric created a safe, creative container that was both focussed and exploratory, allowing the project to truly blossom. I felt respected as an artist and a leader in the space, an experience I have not had too often as a woman in music. Eric also offered encouragement and thoughtful communication with my bandmates, so that everyone felt included and successful in their contributions.”
-Katy Hellman, Emerald Ground Water
“We set ourselves a heady goal as a band of recording nine new songs in ten hours. Eric was spontaneous and focused, knowing when to step in as a collaborator. He made us a better band, and his professionalism helped us produce a great album that we’re very proud of.”
-Mickey Western
“Eric’s naturally brilliant musical ear and abilities, combined with his kind, patient, detail-oriented, and light hearted demeanor, make him an incredible person to work with in the studio. I’ve been lucky to have collaborated with him in his producer and engineer roles on multiple occasions, and it is always both a joyful and generative time.”
-Hannah Hausman, Honey and Soul
“Eric George’s thoughtful approach to music production is built on a sturdy foundation. With many years experience as a songwriter, performer, and recordist, Eric has an ear for arrangement. His workflow is inspired and efficient.”
